A VISIT TO THE WYETH ESTATE

October 20, 2014 1 Comment

It’s no secret the state of Pennsylvania has some really amazing history and culture. When my mom visited me this past week we decided to check something off of our PA bucket list and visit the Wyeth estate and museum about 45 minutes south east of the city. The Wyeth estate is the property of the Wyeth family, including their family home and the studios of father son artists, N.C. (Newell Convers, what a name) and Andrew. N.C. was an early 20th century realist painter and very successful illustrator, most famously for Treasure Island. Andrew was a realist and regionalist painter of the mid 20th century – his most famous work is arguably Christina’s World  (see below) which hangs in the MoMa in NYC. Andrew was the youngest of N.C.’s five children, all of whom were artistic- one musician- and grew up in the Wyeth home in Chadds Ford, PA. The beautiful river-front museum that is on the property includes many works by N.C., Andrew, Andrew’s son Jamie and other artists of the Brandywine River Valley. We took a tour of the home as well as N.C.’s little white studio up the hill from the house. The studio was filled with easels and many objects he used as models for this illustrations and paintings – really fascinating. If you are in the Philadelphia area, I highly recommend the trip, as it was so interesting and very, very scenic, especially in the fall.

MY GUIDE TO PHILLY

August 18, 2014 1 Comment

Recently I was asked to create a Summer Style and Hot Spot guide to Philly for Glam Media’s latest app. I’ve been in Philly now for just 1 year and 8 months (crazy right? feels like it has been so much longer!), which hardly makes me an expert on the city – but I have found a handful of gems (shops! restaurants! bars!) that I really love and frequent often (and take all of my visitors to) and it was fun to create this guide to share them with all of you. See below for my shoppable guide – and download the free iphone and ipad app here to see Style Guides for cities all across the U.S. by fashionable blogging gals.

I was asked recently to put together a little guide to Philly- all of my favorite places to eat, drink & do (which I will be publishing here very soon)- including pictures of me in front of my favorite Philly landmark. I chose the Philadelphia Art Museum- specifically, it’s front steps, which are of course iconic for those scenes in ‘Rocky.’ The Art Museum is my favorite landmark for a couple of reasons –  1) the art inside (so many good impressionists), and 2) the view from the top of the steps (I missed the mark on a picture of that for sure), which is of the whole city looking down Ben Franklin Parkway to City Hall.  You can’t miss a trip here if you ever visit Philly (and you should! Come hang with me!). My outfit is an ode to classic East Coast Prep – which seemed appropriate- with my own twist of course (I don’t think anyone would ever call me ‘preppy’ but I do have an appreciation for the classics). Nautical Stripes in a cool slouchy silhouette and a structured Navy fluted skirt. Classic tortoise shell sunglasses and a red lip finish off the a-little-Americana look.

The sunshine is out and this weekend is looking to be in the 80s! I’m a plannin a day trip to the beach! Gotta get some vitamin D and get my toes in the ocean!

TRAVEL, WHAT I WORE

IN THE WISSAHICKON VALLEY

WISSAKHICKON022

When I chose to move away from San Francisco last winter, one of the things I knew I was going to miss was the nature and all of the outdoorsy activities I used to do in the Bay Area. I used to love to take my trusty Subaru outside of the city on the weekends to go on a hike in Marin up Mount Tam, put my feet in the Ocean at Ocean or Stinson Beach or head up the 80 into the Sierras to Tahoe. Growing up on an island in the great Pacific Northwest, I didn’t ever realize how much I loved being in nature and the out of doors, and how refreshing and rejuvenating it was for my spirit until I moved to the city. While I love the energy and culture of cities, they can feel claustrophobic at times to me. Luckily, San Francisco had so much surrounding nature to offer. I knew it just wasn’t going to be the same in Philly – the ocean is an hour + drive away (could be worse) and the state is pretttyyyyy flat. However, Philly has surprised me in several ways unexpectedly, and now I have discovered what I think might just become my new weekend oasis.

When one of my oldest friends from said Pacific Northwest island visited me this past weekend (love her), I convinced her pretty easily to ditch out on seeing the usual tourist attractions (still haven’t seen the Liberty Bell in person, oh well) and instead get out our hiking boots and explore Wissahickon Valley Park just northwest of the city. It’s where people tell you to go when you tell them you like outdoorsy stuff, and I am surprised it took me this long to get there. We were about 2 weeks late to really seeing the fall leaves in their most brilliance, but the park really was beautiful and the light was perfect. There is even a cozy historical Inn in the Park where you can enjoy lunch- or just post hike Bourbon-spiked Hot Ciders. We said yes to that, twice. Sharing pictures from our day here…

WHAT I WORE

AND WE’RE BACK!

October 27, 2013 1 Comment

PHILLYTOUR012You didn’t think I had completely disappeared from the internets did you?! Well lucky for you, I’m back! woohoo. Fall seemed like the perfect season to relaunch The Wonder Girl as the leaves are changing, the tide is turning and it’s starting to feel more and more like my little home here. For everyone wondering (a lot of you, I know and heard, and I thank you for thinking of me) I’m doing great here in Philadelphia. Enjoying the journey of being somewhere completely new, exploring the east coast, meeting all kinds of new people, feeling all the seasons, etc etc. Since I last left you, I have been on all kinds of adventures and I’ll be doing a rehash here of course. For my first post back, here are a few pics exploring the hidden streets of this charming little city.

Pretty darling huh? We took these pictures when my good friend Alicia came and visited me for a weekend in September. I love showing my weekend visitors around here, to all the places I’ve come to enjoy- my favorite walk to the river, my favorite restaurants (more to come on those), my coffee place, and of course, the charm of the tree lined streets and side alleys peppering my neighborhood. Most people are surprised by how great Philly really is… So if you’re thinking of visiting someday, I think you should! We can hang out :-). More of my favorite places to come ♥.

This past Friday while my mom was in town visiting I played hooky from work and we took a road trip out to Glen Mills, Pennsylvania to pay a visit to ‘Terrain’  -a nursery/lifestyle store and cafe by the Urban Outfitters team. I had been wanting to visit Terrain ever since moving to Philly as I had heard it was such a cool shopping experience and totally worth the trip out of the city. I love a good nursery and Terrain did not disappoint. In additional to beautiful plants and trees (including an adorable succulents wall), the store was stocked with the prettiest and most unique housewares and cooking supplies. It is one of those stores that is like walking and shopping through an amazingly decorated indoor/outdoor living experience home. My mom and I both wanted to move in, right then and there. If you are ever in the Philly area, you must go (there is also another one in Westport, Connecticut). For now, you can shop online.…

I am settling in nicely to my life here. My mom helped me move in (finally), paint and outfit an adorable 1 bedroom apartment in the middle of the city and I am so enjoying the fun of decorating the place and creating my very own little cozy corner of the universe in this semi foreign city I have moved to. It has officially stopped snowing daily (watch once I say this, it will snow tomorrow) and I am starting to really appreciate all the quirks of this old, historical city. Mom and I didn’t do as much exploring as we would have liked (next trip), but we did eat some delicious food – at a corner restaurant Mercato and at the cult favorite, Han Dynasty. We even hit up Franklin Fountain for Sunday afternoon to-die-for old fashioned milkshakes. Mom was surprised at how much I knew my way around already! go me. cheers, Tara xx
